About the ACUADS 2008 Conference
Sites of activity / On the edge
In 2008, the focus of the annual ACUADS conference will be on how learning and teaching environments in Australian art and design schools contribute to the development of an edgy and innovative research culture.
The theme of the 2008 conference Sites of activity / On the edge will focus on bridging the divides between teaching and research in art and design education.
At a recent seminar at the Hawke Research Institute for Sustainable Societies, Paul Carter noted that interdisciplinary research often operates across inherited and profoundly defended boundaries. Yet successfully addressing the big problems, like managing Australia's water resources, requires collaboration across multiple disciplines. It is clear that the time for being territorial regarding disciplinary boundaries is past. It is also obvious that much exciting and meaningful research takes place outside of disciplinary parameters, indeed often upon the edge. Such research employs our capacity for making connections and allows us to think differently about where we are.
