Welcome to Postgraduate Study at LLS
People start postgraduate study for a variety of reasons: to further develop an interest or passion they already know something about, to expand their career choices through further qualification and specialisation, or even to enter an academic career. The postgraduate program in the Louis Laybourne Smith School of Architecture and Design (the LLS School) consists of two streams:
1. The Master of Sustainable Design (DMSD), an interdisciplinary coursework program intended for recent graduates and practicing design professionals wishing to upgrade their knowledge and skills or specialise in sustainable design. This is a fee-paying course and open to anyone holding a relevant design degree.
The program can be taken full time over two years, or part time over 3 ½ years. Half of the program is based on ‘real-world’ hands-on studio-based projects. These are supported by a suite of specialist seminars and electives tailored to the individual’s needs, and the program concludes with a large individual design research project. Applicants should contact Dr Robert Crocker, the School’s Postgraduate Degrees Coordinator.

2. The Master of Architecture (DMRA), Master of Design (DMRC)
and Doctor of Philosophy (DPAC). These are degrees by research only,
and are offered each year to a limited number of suitably qualified
applicants on a case-by-case basis. Applicants for research degrees are
expected to hold a good honours degree or equivalent in a design-related
discipline. They are expected to complete their studies towards a Masters
degree within 2 years of full-time study (or up to 4 years part time) or
towards a Doctorate within 3-4 years of full-time study (or up to 8 years
part time).
Before applying for a research degree, applicants should have identified a suitable research topic and a potential supervisor from amongst the staff in the School qualified to supervise such a project. They are strongly advised to contact the School’s Postgraduate Degrees Coordinator, Dr Robert Crocker, well in advance of submitting their application.
