The George Alexander Foundation Mechanical Engineering Scholarship for Rural and Regional Students
The George Alexander Foundation was established by Mr Alexander AM in 1972 to provide grants for public charitable purposes in Australia. Reflecting the Founder's special interests, The George Alexander Foundation has an emphasis to help talented young people who have demonstrated academic ability, particularly those from rural and regional communities, for whom scholarships would make a significant contribution to achieving their educational goals.
The George Alexander Foundation Mechanical Engineering Scholarships Program was established in 2008. The following outlines the Guidelines underlying this Program.
About the scholarship
This scholarship aims to contribute to the living support expenses of talented rural students wishing to relocate to Adelaide to study a Bachelor of Engineering at the University of South Australia's School of Advanced Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering.
Scholarship applications are open to students who meet all of the following criteria:
- Australian Citizens;
- Year 12 school leavers (students who have been on exchange programs or gap year for up to 12 months after completion of Year 12 are also eligible to apply);
- Applicants who have been accepted into a:
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical and Sustainable Systems) or,
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical and Applied Mechatronics) or
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical and Nanotechnology) or
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical and Advanced Manufacturing) or
- Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical)
at the University of South Australia's School of Advanced Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering and will be commencing their studies in Study Period 2, 2012;
- Non full-fee paying students;
- Applicants who are able to demonstrate that they live in a rural or regional area of South Australia; and
- Applicants who complete the grant application in full and lodge it by the advertised closing date with the specified University office.
The value of the scholarship
The value of the scholarship will be:
- A$2,000 per year paid annually over the 4 standard years of the degree, with
- An additional $2,000 should the scholarship holder undertake their mandatory Industrial Experience with UniSA's Agricultural Machinery Research & Design Centre
Applicants should address the following:
- Demonstrate a commitment to their community via extracurricular activities that may have included employment, work experience, volunteer work, community activities and/or leadership roles
- Provide a brief typed personal statement of no more than 500 words from the applicant that outlines how the scholarship would benefit and enhance his/her opportunities to undertake full time study; why the applicant has chosen to study a Bachelor of Engineering including any long term goals as a result of this study
- Two referee's reports outlining suitability for a scholarship:
- A referee's report from a person qualified to comment on academic studies, preferably a subject coordinator from the applicant's secondary school and/or a school principal
- A referee's report from a current or past employer or a person competent to supply a character reference (for example, a person with whom the candidate has undertaken community service or volunteer activities).
