Student guidelines for industrial experience
- If a student has at least two years of relevant engineering work experience (whether in Australia or overseas), they can complete a Recognition of Practical Experience form and submit it with their CV and supporting documentation (such as certificates or letters from employers) to the Senior Academic Support Officer (SASO) for review by the Industry Experience Coordinator (IEC). The
SASO will then inform the student whether they are required to complete any further industrial experience. If the experience is considered adequate, the Industry Experience Coordinator signs the form and the
SASO returns the form to the student.
- For students who are yet to obtain industry experience, or need to obtain further experience, the student identifies and secures an industry placement - usually at the end of third year
- and submits details of the company they are working with and tasks they will be undertaking to the
SASO on the Proposal for Industrial Experience form.
- The IEC determines whether the placement is appropriate and relevant and approves the placement by signing the form and returning to the
SASO for return to the student. If the company or tasks are deemed inappropriate, the IEC will request that the student re-negotiate the tasks with the company, or may ask the student to find another host company.
- Once approval is received from the IEC, the student negotiates pay rates and work arrangements with the host company and formally accepts the placement, and completes relevant UniSA paperwork (FS23 Insurance Form for unpaid placements; IP or confidentiality agreements as required).
- The student keeps a daily diary of activities and tasks throughout their period of industrial experience. This diary forms the basis of the Industry Experience Report that each student is required to submit.
- Once the placement is complete, the student fills in the details and has the company sign the Certificate of Practical Experience
- The student completes their Industry Experience Report and submits with the company-signed Certificate of Practical Experience to the
SASO for review by the IEC.
- The IEC reviews the report and signs the Certificate of Practical Experience if they are satisfied with the content and returns the signed form and report to the
SASO for return to the student. The IEC can also request further content or detail to be included and the report resubmitted
- The student enrols in the 0-unit course MENG 3007 Industrial Experience
When submitting the final thesis, the student must include the following documentation to receive a Non Graded Pass (NGP) for MENG 3007 Industrial Experience:
FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE UNDERTAKEN EXPERIENCE DURING THE PROGRAM:
- Industry Experience Report - bound as Appendix 1
- Completed and signed Proposal for Industry Experience - bound as part of Appendix 1
- Completed and signed Certificate of Practical Experience - bound as part of Appendix 1
- Confidentiality Agreement (if applicable) - bound at the front of the thesis
FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE RECEIVED RECOGNITION OF PRIOR EXPERIENCE:
- Completed and signed Recognition of Practical Experience - bound as part of Appendix 1
- CV and supporting documentation - bound as Appendix 1
