Where are we climbing?
Mount Kinabalu is located 130kms from Kota Kinabalu, the capital of the
Malaysian state of Sabah. It is the highest mountain in South-East Asia with
its peak 4,101 meters. No special climbing skills or equipment are required
as Mt Kinabalu is one of the easiest mountains in the world to climb and
usually takes about two days to climb. 1 full day climb, over night
accommodation in a local rest house followed by a very early 2am start on the second day
to reach the summit and watch the magnificent sunrise.
What will we see on the climb?
While climbing the mountain you will experience Mt Kinabalu’s extensive
plant growth, large variety of birds and the changes in ecosystem as they
reach higher altitude.
Breakfast daily and other meals as per itinerary including a special welcome dinner.
Who can join the tour?
All UniSA alumni are invited to join the expedition, together with partners,
friends or family. All participants must be 18 years or older as at 1
January, 2008.
How fit do I have to be?
We have rated the difficulty of the MK08 climb as moderate – strenuous
as it is steep with some sections, closer to the summit, requiring the
assistance of ropes, ladders and handrails. Therefore, you will need a good
level of fitness and be willing to undertake an extensive training program
in preparation for the MK08 climb. All climbers should consult with their
doctor before undertaking the climb or training for the climb.
How do I get fit enough
to do the climb?
Members of the expedition have the opportunity to join an elite
physical training program specially designed for
MK08 by UniSA’s Health
Science professionals. MK08 Camp, for those able to access the City East
Campus in Adelaide, South Australia, is a six month structured training
package designed to improve all aspects of health and fitness.
If you are joining the expedition from outside Adelaide, you will have
access to MK08 Camp leader, Andrew Hassam, for advice on building a self-regulated fitness program.
