In our experience UniSA alumni conquer mountains in the workplace everyday, so we’re giving you a real mountain to conquer in the wilderness.

UniSA’s Alumni Network is offering a unique opportunity to be part of an exclusive group of budding mountaineers to climb Mount Kinabalu  in the east Malaysian state of Sabah. It’s a great opportunity to challenge your body, mind and spirit when you join our first MK08 mountaineering expedition.

Professor Patrick James , Head of School, School of Natural and Built Environments, will lead a group of between 15-20 aspiring mountaineers through the Kinabalu Park and up Mount Kinabalu. Himself a keen mountaineer, Prof James brings ecological insight in addition to a great enthusiasm for mountaineering, to the expedition.

Specialist mountaineering skills are not needed to conquer Mt Kinabalu. There are no plunging chasms or sheer drops, but you will need to be physically fit to tackle the steep ascending tracks.

As part of the package, members of the expedition will have the chance to join an elite physical training program specially designed for MK08 by UniSA’s Health Science professionals. MK08 Camp, for those able to access the City East Campus in Adelaide, South Australia, is a six month structured training package designed to improve all aspects of health and fitness.

Those people joining the expedition from outside Adelaide will have access to MK08 Camp leader, Andrew Hassam, for advice on building a self-regulated fitness program.

The Alumni Network, together with Renaissance Tours, has put together an impressive nine day itinerary (PDF 835 KB - download Adobe Acrobat) which includes a cocktail party with the local Malaysian Alumni chapter, guided tours and eco-seminars, in addition to the climb. You may choose to join the expedition as part of your own private holiday plans. September is an ideal time to holiday in beautiful Malaysia.
