Brief Resume of Research Activity and Interests
Professor James joined the University of South Australia in April 2004. Prior to his present appointment, Patrick was Associate Professor in Geoscience and Deputy Head of School of Earth and Environmental Science and former Associate Dean of Science (Teaching & Learning and Learning Technology) at the University of Adelaide, South Australia. Patrick was also recently Programme Leader for Education and Training in the CRC for Landscape Environments and Mineral ExplorationProfessor James previously engaged in research in many areas of geoscience whilst at Adelaide University, including structural geology and tectonics, geological mapping, remote sensing, mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and environmental geoscience. This research was conducted worldwide including Europe, Greenland, Antarctica, Africa and Australia.
His other main academic interests are in science education and in e-Learning, which has developed into directions for implementing and evaluating learning technology. This has included being a long term member of the UK Association for Learning Technology (ALT – current conference program committee member) and ASCILITE (conference volume editor), a presenter at CAL (UK), ASCILITE (Aust.) and AACE/Ed Media (US) conferences, a developer and implementer of CAL, IMM, e-Learning and other IS technologies in teaching and learning and advocating integration of appropriate pedagogic principles alongside technological innovations.
His current role lies in leading the Natural Built Environment School into many areas of Sustainable Development issues as they apply to the natural and built environments. Professor James is engaged in studies of how strategies need to be developed to promote Sustainability including better use of transport, land, water, materials, minerals and energy resources and better planning to reduce the risks associated with natural and anthropogenic hazards.
