Southern Ridges Canopy Walk

Saturday 11 July 2009
Organised by the Australian Alumni Singapore (AAS)

UniSA Alumni GroupA total of 800 alumni from 30 different Australian, British, French, Canadian, Taiwan and local universities (61 from UniSA) and educational institutions plus their families assembled excitedly at the starting point at Mount Faber. Despite the initial downpour the inaugural “Alumni Unite & walk Together” was a great success and a wonderful opportunity to network and make new friends.

Just after the flag-off by Guest of Honour GOH, Mr. Mr Sam Tan Chin Siong, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Trade & Industry and Ministry of Information, Communications & the Arts and MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC, the rain started. This, however did not deter the men, women and children of all ages on their way to Hortpark. The rain eventually gave way to the cool morning breeze along the Southern ridges path, which made for pleasant walking conditions.

UniSA Alumni group shotThe reception at the completion of the walk provided the opportunity for participants to mingle and network with all the different groups. For current UniSA Alumni, it also enabled them to meet and greet a larger pool of people, as well as raise awareness of the UniSA Alumni Singapore chapter.

The end of the walk would also see photo opportunities for banner bearers who were proudly displaying their alumni colours with the MP Sam Tan, who noted that like the current economic climate, the weather is unpredictable. However, he was pleased that despite the rain, it did not stop participants from pressing forwards. MP Tan further applauded the inaugural event and encouraged participants to continue to walk with their families. He continued to praise the Organising Committee’s level of enthusiasm in its commitment to start planning for next year’s walk.

Group Banner PhotoMr Tan Kah Hoe, Singapore’s former High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and a member of the Executive Committee of AAS, who initiated and chaired the Organising Committee will further conduct similar events, with a charitable element to ensure alumni members can contribute meaningfully to the community and society at large.
