The 35thAnnual Essington
A free, public lecture at 6pm, followed by refreshments at 7pm, proudly

Presented by: Professor Ian Plimer (School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, The University of Adelaide) is Australia’s best known Geologist. He has been awarded medals from the German Geological society, the Royal Society of New South Wales, and the AusIMM Ian was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of London, humanist of the year in 1995 and was also awarded the centenary Medal. He sat on the Earth Sciences Committee of the Australian Research Council for many years. He is a regular radio and television broadcaster of science to the general public and has won the Eureka Prize for the promotion of science and other publications. Title As BHP’s Chief Executive 1921-1950; Chairman 1950-1952; and Deputy-Chairman 1952-1961, Essington Lewis was instrumental in the development of this iconic company. His role in coordinating Australian industry’s response to the demands of the second world war effort is less widely recognised. The contribution of this unsung, great South Australian to our national development is commemorated by the annual presentation by the AusIMM Adelaide Branch of the Essington Lewis Memorial Lecture. A speaker influential in the Australian mining industry is invited to present national and international-level perspectives on a topical aspect of our industry.
