4. Research Video: ADULT EDUCATORS TALK ABOUT RESEARCH
Investigating adult literacy and numeracy contexts in South AustraliaAdult Educators Talk About Research describes how five educators approached the task of researching adult literacy and numeracy provision in South Australian contexts. The video was produced as part of an ongoing project conducted by the School of Education, University of South Australia in association with Language Australia to mentor novice researchers. Assistance from Spencer Foundation (USA) enabled final completion of the video.
Participants were invited to attend a series of workshops to develop a research question, expand the question into a suitable research methodology, implement the project and complete a short report on the findings. Details of the reports are available on the Adult Literacy Research Centre (South Australia) website http://www.unisa.edu.au/alrn
The researchers talk about such things as the context of their workplaces, their own interests and concerns about literacy and numeracy provision, research methods they employed, the challenge of keeping focussed on the research problem and the changing political and economic structures that influence teachers lives as they research their practice. Contexts range across numeracy provision amongst private providers, workplace training in a health setting, community literacy programs in neighbourhood houses, an analysis of documents to map policy changes over the last decade, and an exploration of teachers work in changing times in South Australia.
