ADAPT project scans
The Australian Defence Anthropometric Personnel Testing (ADAPT) project has completed its national body scanning tour around Australia. The Vitus Smart 3D whole body scanner has been successfully utilised in Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney and Perth.
The Vitus Smart 3D whole body scanner is used to create a 3D body scan of the human form. This technology is multi-purpose and has been brought to the University of South Australia, in conjunction with the Australian Government Department of Defence. The ADAPT project has been created to determine crew sizing in relation to crew station design in order to maximise Australian Defence capabilities. The data gathered from this study may also allow aircraft designers to modify existing aircraft to better fit a wider range of body sizes and shapes, including women. The same techniques can be applied to other types of military vehicles and workstations, such as tanks and ships.
The ADF is keen to stress non-military social spin-offs, and the successful grafting of defence and research cultures, with a social charter. The technologies proposed for this project are very new, and this particular solution has never been tried. Potential spin-offs include:
- Applications in textiles and clothing. The use of 3D whole-body scanners may lead to new standards for clothing sizes to better fit “typical” body shapes in the population
- Applications in the health sciences. Pilot projects have been set up looking at the relationships between 3D body shape and diabetes and musculoskeletal disorders
- Applications in industrial design. It is possible in principle to create furniture such as car seats and armchairs moulded to individual body shapes (so-called “mass customisation”)
- Applications in graphic arts. The ability to create 3D “photographs” of individual bodies opens doors for graphic artists. One recent project scanned every resident in a far northern Australian mining town, systematically distorted the 3D shapes, and cast them in steel
There has been much media attention regarding the ADAPT project and the Vitus Smart 3D whole body scanner. Many people are curious to see the outcomes of this high-tech scanning equipment. Linked to this page are individual male and female Vitus Smart 3D whole body scans in both low and high resolution respectively.
In many ways, this is a technology waiting for applications, an answer waiting for the right questions.
Low resolution:
Full body turn scan male (360
degree Vitus Smart 3D whole body scanner) (MPEG 816KB)
Full body turn scan female (360
degree Vitus Smart 3D whole body scanner) (MPEG 776KB)
High resolution:
Full body turn scan male (360 degree
Vitus Smart 3D whole body scanner) (MPEG 1.72MB)
Full body turn scan female (360 degree
Vitus Smart 3D whole body scanner) (MPEG 1.75MB)
