AIEF-BHP Billiton Tertiary Scholarships

AIEF-BHP Billiton Tertiary Scholarships aim to support the next generation of industry leaders from the classroom to careers.

The scholarships are awarded to outstanding Indigenous students studying engineering, science and other mining related degrees and provide up to A$30,000 per annum for accommodation, living and educational expenses.

The scholarships cover:

  • The cost of accommodation up to a maximum of A$22,000 per annum (open to students living in residential (college) and non-residential (private) accommodation).
  • An annual stipend of A$2,000 per annum for textbooks and education expenses.
  • A living allowance of A$6,000 per annum.

The A.M.E. Bale Travelling Scholarship and Art Prize

The A.M.E. Bale Travelling Scholarship and Art Prize is awarded to Australian artists who have demonstrated talent and achievement in traditional styles. The Art Prize is intended to encourage, support and advance classical training of emerging artists (in their early to mid-career) at any stage of life, who are pursuing the study and practice of traditional art and who desire to study the works of old masters.

There are three categories for the Art Prize.

  1. Major Award for a travelling scholarship - $50,000
  2. AME Bale Art Prize in the medium of oils and/or acrylics - $5,000
  3. AME Bale Art Prize for works on paper - $5,000

A.M.E. Bale was born in Melbourne in 1875 and studied art under Frederick McCubbin and L Bernard Hall at the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne. She developed a reputation as a fine artist who distinguished herself particularly as one of Australia's pre-eminent flower and still life painters of the early 20th Century. She established the A.M.E. Bale Travelling Scholarship and Art Prize through her will to support Australian artists in perpetuity.

The judging panel is comprised through the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society who provide expert assistance to the trustee, Perpetual Trustees Victoria Ltd, in judging the award, taking into consideration the implementation of both the spirit and letter of Miss Bale's will.

Anne Wexler Australian-American Public Policy Scholarships

The Anne Wexler Scholarships are part of the Australian Government's Australia Awards Program and are funded through the Australian Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DIICCSRTE) and administered by the Australian-American Fulbright Commission.

Valued at up to $A140,000, this scholarship supports up to two years of study or research in the United States.  

Two Wexler Scholarships will be awarded annually. One for an Australian citizen to enrol in a U.S. Masters degree program in Public Policy and one for an American (US) citizen to enrol in an Australian Masters program in Public Policy.

Australia Awards - Endeavour Awards

The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government's internationally competitive, merit based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas to undertake study, research or professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to do the same abroad.

The Endeavour Awards aim to:

Bendi Lango bursary

Established by the Australian Psychological Society (APS) to support Indigenous postgraduate psychology students in difficult financial circumstances. Each bursary of financial assistance is valued at $15,000 per annum during the time that the applicant is in full-time study (or $7500 per part-time year) in either a Masters coursework degree (MPsych) or professional Doctorate (DPsych or PsychD).

Since 2006 the APS has assisted six Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander postgraduate psychology students facing financial hardship, initially with funds raised from the Bendi Lango series of art exhibitions organised by former President Amanda Gordon. In 2011, this initiative was formalised as a fund for tax-deductible donations. These member donations have exceeded $30,000 in both 2011 and 2012, providing strong endorsement for the Indigenous Education and Employment component of the APS Reconciliation Action Plan.

The establishment of the bursary is one response to the need to boost the growth in the numbers of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander psychologists.

Brian Gray Scholarship Program

The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) and the Reserve Bank of Australia continue to support the Brian Gray Scholarship program in memory of Brian Gray, who died on 24 August 2001 while serving as Executive General Manager of APRA's Policy, Research and Consulting Division.

The Brian Gray Scholarship program funds four scholarships annually, to the value of $12,500 each. The scholarship purpose is to support students who intend to focus full time on their studies and research. As part of the scholarship, students will devote a substantial amount of time to an agreed research topic, benefiting from access to APRA expertise and data.

The scholarship is open to Australian and New Zealand citizens and permanent residents undertaking full time study at Australian universities. There is a preference to award these scholarships to honours students in their final undergraduate year however students undertaking an academic Masters degree with a research focus will also be considered. Applicants will need to be undertaking research in a field relevant to prudential supervision. This may include research on the economics of regulation as well as banking, insurance and superannuation, particularly the prudential supervision and financial soundness of these industries, or econometric and statistical studies using APRA's databases.

Bushfire CRC Postgraduate Research Scholarships

The Bushfire CRC is calling for outstanding postgraduate students to be part of a dynamic national bushfire research program for safer communities and ecological sustainability, investigating areas such as fire behaviour, management of fire in the landscape, and social and economic aspects of bushfire.

We seek students with strong academic records and relevant experience who are keenly interested in pursuing a PhD with a view to researching key issues for fire and land management agencies around Australia and New Zealand.

The Bushfire CRC is offering outstanding postgraduate students access to:

  • Full Scholarships of $28,000 per annum over 3 years, and
  • Top Up Scholarships (for APAs and University scholarships) of $10,000 per annum over 3 years.

Cambridge Australia Scholarships

Cambridge Australia Scholarships Limited, ACN 146 517 366, formerly known as the Cambridge Australia Trust (CAT), is a not-for-profit organisation. It provides scholarships for outstanding Australian graduates to undertake Masters and Ph.D studies at the University of Cambridge, England.
In collaboration with the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust, Cambridge Australia Scholarships awards up to ten Ph.D scholarships and a number of Masters degree half-scholarships each year.

Successful Cambridge Australia scholars, once they have completed their degrees at Cambridge, are known as Fellows of the Cambridge Commonwealth Society. This international network of scholars and Cambridge alumni encompasses all countries supported by the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust.

Around 1000 Australians have been supported by the Cambridge Australia Scholarships (and its predecessor organisation) since establishment in the 1980s.

Catherine Helen Spence Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship will support a woman to investigate social problems and/or undertake a study in the field of social sciences. The investigation or study should be relevant to social conditions in South Australia and be capable of being applied for the benefit of the state.Women aged 20 to 35 years, who meet the South Australian residential criteria, are eligible to apply. The scholarship, valued at $25,000 in 2017, will be awarded on the basis of the quality and relevance of the research proposal, and meeting the eligibility criteria.

The Charlie Perkins Indigenous Scholarships

Each year the Charlie Perkins Scholarship Trust offers two Scholarships for Indigenous postgraduates to study for up to three years at either Cambridge or Oxford universities.

To be considered for the Scholarship, applicants must have applied for a course at Cambridge and/or Oxford. Applicants must also submit:

  • a cover letter
  • a curriculum vitae
  • an official transcript of university results
  • confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
  • details for five referees, three of which should be academic referees (email and telephone numbers).

Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwifes (CATSINaM) Scholarships

If you are studying to become a nurse or midwife, then you might consider applying for a scholarship to help you through your studies.

There are different types of scholarships. Some offer assistance with education-related expenses and living costs. Others might offer an opportunity to attend a course-related conference. But all scholarships offer support to help you with your studies.

You might also come across the term 'bursary'. This is usually a sum of money given to a student based on financial need or academic achievement.

If you are applying for a scholarship, it's very important to understand exactly what is being offered to you, and what is expected from you. For example, you may have to work for a particular employer for a specific period of time once you have finished your studies. Make sure you read the 'fine print' and ask questions about the scholarship so that you know what all of the conditions and requirements will be before you apply.

Endeavour Foundation Endowment Challenge Fund Grants

The Endeavour Foundation Endowment Challenge Fund aims to benefit Australians with a disability, especially people with an intellectual or developmental disability.

The Fund seeks to encourage quality and innovation in the disability services sector. Grants are available for researchers and postgraduate students to undertake research into issues of key importance for the Australian disability sector.

The Fund also seeks to support people with a disability to participate in the world in which we live. Grants are available for non-profit organisations who wish to expand their current activities to include people with a disability, or deliver innovative projects that enhance social inclusion for people with a disability.

QArt grants are available to researchers, students and non-profit organisations to undertake projects focusing on artistic expression for people with an intellectual disability.

The Fulbright Scholarship

The Fulbright Scholarship Program is one of the largest and most prestigious educational scholarship programs in the world.

Established by the United States government in 1946, it now exists between the U.S. and 150 countries. Loris Williams Memorial Scholarship - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders

The Loris Williams Scholarship, first awarded in 2008, is named in memory of the late Loris Williams (1949-2005). Loris, the first Aboriginal person from Queensland to be awarded professional qualifications as an archivist, was a passionate advocate for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to access archives and records in public and private collections. This ASA Scholarship keeps alive Loris' vision to encourage Indigenous people to pursue careers in the archival and records management profession.

The scholarship will provide up to $3,000 to go towards course fees, books and computing costs. Students must be studying archives and records at either university (undergraduate or post-graduate) or at vocational education and training institutions (from Certificate III onwards).

Criteria for selection:

  • Successful applicants must be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.
  •  Show that they have the potential to complete their chosen course of study.
  •  Show that they are interested in and committed to a career in archives and records.

Application Process
Applications for 2017 are now open, closing date is 13 April 2017. To apply, please complete the application form at the end of this page, and send it to the ASA office.
Each scholarship will provide up to $3,000 which can be used to pay fees, books and computing costs.

  • Students may be studying at university from bachelor's level up to PhD or in a Vocational Education and Training institutions from Certificate III onwards.
  •  Scholarship holders will also be given associate membership of the Australian Society of Archivists and will have a mentor to guide them in developing their career.
  •  The scholarship is available for one year of study only. Successful applicants should not expect to be offered further assistance for a period of 3 years.
  •  Applicants are assessed by a selection committee of three people on the basis of written applications and a telephone interview.

Margaret George Award

Margaret George was a young Australian historian whose work 'Australia and the Indonesian Revolution' was published posthumously by Melbourne University Press in 1980, six years after her premature death. Her book was the first detailed account of Australia's approach to Dutch Indonesian relations between 1945 and 1949.

One of the National Archives' key functions is to encourage and facilitate use of its collection by promoting archival research in Australia and encouraging scholarly use of its holdings.
The National Archives offers Margaret George Awards annually to individuals interested in conducting research substantially utilising its collection.

Successful applicants will have scholarly credentials and will have completed a postgraduate degree as a minimum. Applicants could be emergent historians, academics, independent researchers or journalists with a talent for research. It is desirable that applicants have an established record of achievement in their chosen field and the potential to excel further.
The award is not granted to support current postgraduate or doctoral projects.

Successful applicants may undertake their award at any time from the date of the announcement of the award until 30 June the following year.

The National Archives will provide:

  • a research area at an Archives' office in any Australian capital city
  • access to an Archives' staff member who will act as a first point-of-contact for the successful applicant and assist with coordinating project advice if necessary
  • assistance up to the value of $10,000 for:
    • living supplement during the period of the tenure
    • airfare or equivalent from the applicant's place of residence to the Archives' office where they will undertake the research.

The final grant amount will be at the discretion of the judging panel.

The Archives provides public access to records in its collection that are over 30 years old. The award does not entitle researchers to any special or privileged access.

Parliamentary Library Summer Research Scholarship

The Parliamentary Library is offering one six-week Summer Research Scholarship in January-February 2013 to support a research project on a topic of direct relevance to the Australian Parliament. The successful Scholar will receive:

  • experience working in the Australian Parliament
  • privileged access to the Parliamentary Library's collections and facilities
  • interaction with relevant expert librarians and researchers in the Parliamentary Library
  • an honorarium of $1800 payable as a one-off amount at the conclusion of the six-week placement

The Pinnacle Foundation Scholarships

Scholarships will be provided for young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer youth who desire to undertake full-time or part-time education at a public institution of higher education in Australia. It will be for the purpose of gaining an educational or vocational qualification in any profession, trade or the arts. The grant will sit alongside and complement other government funding rather than duplicate it.

The Scholarship will cover such vital needs as the cost of tuition fees or dues to an approved educational institution, laptop, textbooks, uniforms, professional membership or student union fees and professional tools of trade.

The Scholarship is not designed to support expenses such as pocket money, travel to and from educational establishment or other personal expenses not directly related to their studies.

Scholarships will be granted for a period of one year. However, an existing Scholarship holder is entitled to reapply for the Scholarship should they comply with goals enshrined in The Pinnacle Foundation (Criteria and Process) Policy 2011.

Importantly, payments will be made directly to educational institutions and other suppliers of goods and services. This is so recipients can get on with learning and not get bogged down in paying bills. Plus, as a charity, we might be able to do some good deals with suppliers.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Scholarships

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is committed to expanding the pool of research scholars at the hospital by offering a number of
Postgraduate Scholarships, funded either through the Hospital Research Foundation Program grants or by individual departments.

A stipend of $23,728 per annum (2012 APA rate) will be paid to successful applicants depending on the availability of program/department funds, tenable for twelve months initially. Annual renewal for up to three years for Doctoral studies, or for two years for Masters studies, is subject to Terms and Conditions.
Finance and Business Services, TQEH will pay the stipend into a bank account nominated by the student. Stipends are currently tax-free.

Any research of a collaborative nature with university departments outside of TQEH or with other organisations will need terms and conditions to be documented in a research agreement and attached to the Scholarship application.

Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship was established in 1903, under the will of Cecil Rhodes, the Rhodes is the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious international graduate scholarship program in the world. Applicants for a Rhodes Scholarship are considered on the basis of qualities that Cecil Rhodes listed in order to define the type of scholar he desired:

  • Proven intellectual and academic achievement of a high standard.
  • Integrity of character, interest in and respect for one's fellow beings, the ability to lead, and the energy to use their talents to the full.

Rhodes Scholars must have graduated from a university and resided for a number of years in their country of origin. Candidates must be between the ages of 18 years and younger than 25 years by 1 October in the year of application. Women have been eligible to hold Rhodes Scholarships since 1976. No special claim to a Rhodes Scholarship is given on the basis of financial need.

The Royal Australian Air Force Women's Association (RAAFWA) is an organisation created in 1947 and its purpose was to raise money for the educational assistance of needy Royal Australian Air Force families.

Each year the Educational Patriotic Fund Inc (EPF) Committee makes financial grants to students on application to assist with the costs of education; be it primary, secondary, or tertiary.

To be eligible for the grant, it is a requirement that the student has a parent or grand parent, or other close family member (living or dead) who is serving, or had served in RAAF.

There are no specific income limit but of course, grants are decided on actual circumstances and are limited to those families in need.

SARDI Scholarships

The annual SARDI Science Bursary was established in 1994 to commemorate the South Australian Women's Suffrage Centenary (1894-1994).

SARDI Science Bursary for Aboriginal Students
The SARDI Science Bursary for Aboriginal Students was established in 2012. This bursary is provided to an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander graduate undertaking postgraduate studies in agriculture, fisheries or forestry science at a tertiary institution in Australia.

To be eligible students must be:

  • an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Honours graduate
  • currently studying or planning to study post-graduate qualifications in agriculture, fisheries or forestry science
  • at a tertiary institution in Australia

Students will be considered:

  • on the merit of their research program
  • and how it relates to our research departments.

SARDI Science Bursary for Women
The South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) awards this science bursary to a female graduate every year.

To be eligible you must be:

  • a female Honours graduate
  • currently studying or planning to study post-graduate qualifications
  • in agriculture, fisheries or forestry science
  • at a tertiary institution in South Australia

Students will be considered:

  • on the merit of their research program and how it relates to our research programs
  • who are Australian citizens or have permanent resident status in Australia

Tony Noon Scholarship

The Tony Noon Memorial Fund was established in memory of Tony Noon, who made an outstanding contribution to the petroleum industry at APPEA and the Queensland Department of Mines & Energy.

Applicants for this scholarship must be an Australian resident or citizen and be attending university in the year of application.

Applicants must provide details of the amount of funding sought, the purpose for which the funds will be used, and a brief statement setting out the benefits for the applicant and their career. Funds may be sought to:

  • travel within Australia or overseas
  • attend an appropriate conference to present a paper or poster describing their original work in a petroleum-related discipline
  • work with a relevant company or academic institution; or
  • for other purposes relevant to the petroleum industry or the study of oil and gas.

Applicants must address the selection criteria and set out the nature of the work and the type of activity for which funding is sought.

The award will be made on the basis of the nature and relevance of the research to the petroleum industry.

Value: one-off grant to a maximum value of $3,000

Trevor Prescott Memorial Scholarship

The Masonic Foundation Inc has established through its Special Projects Fund a scholarship scheme to commemorate the contribution made by the late Trevor Prescott, AM to education and youth in the South Australian community.

The scholarships are available to students between 20 and 30 years of age to help them advance their careers through further postgraduate studies or equivalent. There are no set qualifications and preference is not given to a Freemason or to a member of the family. Scholarship value shall be determined by the Foundation Board of Management up to a maximum of $20,000, and may be divided between more than one recipient.

Value: up to $20,000

Closing date: 30 June each year
