About regional South Australia

South Australia is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including spectacular coastline, enigmatic desert-scapes, islands teeming with wildlife and some of the oldest mountain ranges on Earth.

The state is mostly dry, with some of the most arid landscapes of the country, and is nearly a million square kilometres in size.

South Australia has a number of diverse Aboriginal groups. Learning about and understanding their unique cultures is a popular tourist activity for many.

The state offers many opportunities for a truly extraordinary experience. North, east, south or west, you will find something unique.

  • Head north from Adelaide and you will find the popular tourist area of the Barossa Valley, a region famous for its wines. Close by is the Clare Valley, famed for its wine, historic houses and stunning scenery. The Flinders Ranges and Outback offer desert beauty and oases and the chance to learn about a broad range of Aboriginal cultures.

  • East of Adelaide you will find the Adelaide Hills, a charming region filled with quaint towns, antique stores and bakeries, often showcasing Adelaide’s fascinating German history. Further east, the Murray River is a popular spot for camping, houseboating and fishing on the river.

  • Down south, the Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island provide both relaxing and rugged beaches for swimming and surfing. Kangaroo Island is also renowned for its wildlife and gourmet wine and food. The Limestone Coast offers volcanic craters, prehistoric caves, beautiful lakes and fascinating underground waterways.

  • Out west, with meandering coastlines and many national parks, the Yorke Peninsula is a great place for swimming, surfing and fishing. The Eyre Peninsula offers locals and visitors stunning and rugged national parks and beaches.
