Centre of Research Excellence for the Prevention of Chronic Conditions in Rural and Remote High Risk Populations

Centre for Research Excellence for the Prevention of Chronic Conditions in Rural and Remote High Risk Populations

The Centre of Research Excellence for the Prevention of Chronic Conditions in Rural and Remote High Risk Populations is a collaboration between the University of South Australia, James Cook University, the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia, Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council and the Royal Flying Doctor Service with funding provided by the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (ANU) CRE program (2012 to 2016).

The research team is undertaking collaborative research in rural and remote communities of SA and QLD which will contribute directly to the prevention of chronic disease at various stages along the care continuum. They are investigating community and health service based strategies such as obesity prevention, nutrition improvement to prevent the onset of chronic diseases such as diabetes, renal and cardiovascular disease in healthy adults and children.

The team are also studying primary health care (PHC) based practices to reduce the rate at which a disease will progress in those already affected. They examine practices which help in the rehabilitation of those hospitalised for chronic conditions. The project will utilise electronic record linkage capabilities.

Research streams

The collaboration brings together researchers and institutions around three research streams:

Stream 1 - Nutrition and Physical Activity in chronic disease prevention: led by Professor Kerin O’Dea

Stream 2 - Mental Health and Substance Misuse in chronic disease prevention: led by A/Professor Alan Clough

Stream 3 - Clinical Systems Improvement in Primary Care: led by Professor Robyn McDermott
