With the importance of evidence-based practice underpinning much of today's clinical practice methodologies there is a new importance and urgency for health care services to be based on evidence derived from rigorous, high quality research. This philosophy and approach now covers all medical arenas, from nursing to medicine to allied health. iCAHE's journal clubs aim to assist allied health practitioners with the incorporation of evidence-based research into everyday practice.
The difficulty facing many allied health practitioners is the increasing number of journals and publications in allied health care combined with more complex and increased workloads. Practitioners are often unable to keep abreast of current literature findings and clinical outcomes due to a lack of time and research availability.
Journal clubs provide an avenue for accessing, evaluating and reflecting upon evidence derived from the literature, thereby promoting evidence-based practice for both the individual practitioner and the organisations they work for. An additional benefit of journal clubs for practitioners is the role they play in ongoing continuing professional development.

Online Journal Clubs
Welcome to the iCAHE online journal club. The iCAHE online journal club was created to develop a network of allied health practitioners seeking to improve health care through evidence-based practice. It is a forum where clinicians can meet, share and learn from the current best evidence. Online journal club members critically appraise, evaluate and discuss current literature with a view to evaluating what they currently do, improving the safety and quality of care for their patients, and building on other disciplines' strengths.

What is involved
There are two stages involved in this online journal club:
Stage I: Face-to-face tutorial (a once-off training session provided by iCAHE in aspects of evidence-based practice, common research designs, literature search techniques, critical appraisal and journal club processes.) Read more
Stage II: Journal club "virtual" forum (This stage comprises of five distinct steps which include:  identification of topic,  formulation of clinical question,  searching, identifying, and accessing of research evidence,  critical appraisal of research evidence and  discussion of research evidence in relation to clinical practice.) Evaluation and Feedback
iCAHE is dedicated to the success and expansion of the iCAHE Allied Health Journal Clubs and provides a forum here for feedback to iCAHE staff. iCAHE Journals Clubs will be routinely evaluated to ensure that it accomplishes its aims and objectives. Additionally, a vehicle for feedback and suggestions will also be provided for practitioners to voice their opinions on processes and outcomes from journal club. To this effect, multiple strategies will be utilised to garner the effects of journal clubs from various stakeholders perspectives.

Southern Cross Care Rehabilitation Service
The Southern Cross Care Rehab Service OTs looked at the Effects of Splinting on Wrist Contracture After Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Trial article.
We all found the critical appraisal very beneficial and it helped us reflect on our own practice: what we are/aren't doing and how this study relates to our client group and setting. Overall our journal club session was successful and the article was very relevant.
Port Pirie Journal Club
The Port Pirie Journal Club looked at the clinical scenario: Is there an overall improvement in development or behaviour in children under five years with developmental delays/behaviour issues who receive therapy with a developmental framework?
This article was great thanks! We had some great discussion around attachment and the changes we can make to our services to include this (something we have been talking about for nearly 12 months!)
