With over 25 years experience in industry, Maria is a serial entrepreneur who has provided strategic business and commercialisation advice to a diverse range of industries. Maria is responsible for the Institute’s external engagement, business development and for driving its strategic direction. Maria also leads research projects and training in strategic growth and competitive positioning.  

She is also responsible for the overall operations of the Centre, ensuring engagement with industry and government is managed professionally, and that project management, along with best practice, underlies all of its collaborative contract research.



Greg Caire

Greg is responsible for managing research projects to ensure they are delivered on time and within budget.  He also supports business development activities and building partnerships and collaborations with industry.  His previous background includes key involvement in the restructure of the Australian Food Safety Centre of Excellence, a joint venture between UTas, CSIRO’s Australian food division and several state and national industry bodies as well as extensive food industry background as a technologist, manufacturing manager and technical marketer.  Greg has a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Science from Monash University.


Frances NolanFrances Nolan

Frances is responsible for managing projects and works with client partners and research teams to achieve on time and on budget project execution. She also manages the Institute's operations and acts as a pivotal communication point for the Institute's professional and academic teams.

She has over 15 years experience in marketing, project management and managerial roles in the corporate sector and has worked for four years as an administrator within the university research sector.


Spring Sampson

Spring is responsible for translating the technical findings of research projects into clear recommendations and strategies for clients. Spring is involved at all stages of the research process including identifying the research aims and scope, data management, analysis, and preparation of reports. She is passionate about delivering high quality research which provides clients with the insights they need to solve problems. Spring is completing her PhD in choice methods and models and has experience in lecturing and teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate courses.


Nico NeumannNico Neumann

Dr Nico Neumann received his PhD in quantitative marketing from UNSW and is a senior analyst at the University of South Australia. His research has been published in the Journal of Retailing and Advances in Consumer Research. In addition to the Institute for Choice (I4C), Nico is a senior researcher at the Centre for Digital Video Intelligence (CDVI) – a new, industry supported academic research centre for ad:tech. His research focuses on meta-analysis/ empirical generalisations, ad:tech/ media measurement and methodology, and choice and attribution modelling. Before joining the CDVI and I4C, Nico has worked for Accenture Management Consulting Strategy, Datalicious, and IPG Mediabrands. Nico is one of the leading experts on attribution modelling in Australia.


 Karen Kong

Senior Survey Programmer

Karen is responsible for the technical aspects of all the Institute’s projects, including survey programming, panel administration, decision support systems and survey application development. She works closely with software and panel providers to ensure surveys are carried out to the specifications of both the clients and academics.

Karen holds a Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Computing degree from the University of Technology, Sydney.


Karla Gatenby

Administrative and Research Assistant

Karla is responsible for working in collaboration with the Institute for Choice team on day-to-day tasks such as finance, computing and general office duties. Karla is currently in her third year of a combined double degree, studying a Bachelor of Commerce - Accounting with a Bachelor of Laws at Macquarie University, Sydney.
