Diabetic Participants Needed

We are looking for people with diabetes (T1 or T2) that are 20-40 years of age and have been diagnosed with diabetes within the last five years or are male aged 20-40 years with diabetes of any duration

The influence of snacking on promoting weight loss and protecting against weight regain

The primary aim of this project is to investigate whether the inclusion of almonds or low-fat carbohydrate-rich snack foods, in an energy restricted diet (i.e. a diet that provides fewer kilojoules than you currently consume) improves weight loss and limits weight regain. We are also interested in seeing whether there are improvements in cardiovascular, liver and gut health and changes in sleep patterns, quality of life, pain and functional mobility.

Participants Wanted!

For a study exploring the relationship between virtual reality and enjoyment in exercise 

You may be eligible to participate if you:

  • Currently do not meet exercise guidelines of 150-300 minutes of moderate-vigorous intensity exercise per week.
  • Are aged 18 - 65 years of age
  • Have not been diagnosed with dementia
  • Do not have blindness or vision difficulties which cannot be corrected by the use of glasses/contacts
  • Are not currently taking any medications that may affect your physical or cognitive abilities
  • Have not been previously diagnosed with a medical or psychiatric disease
  • Do not suffer from motion sickness
  • Do not have epilepsy

Participation Involves:

  • 2-4 Sessions at The University of South Australia (City East, North Tce) or Mawson Lakes
  • Pre-exercise screening and a submaximal fitness test (session 1) (1 hour)
  • Moderate intensity exercise on a stationary bike for 1-3 x 10-15 minutes with Virtual Reality
  • Assessment of enjoyment, experience and difficulty (all sessions)

All participants who complete all required sessions will receive a $40 Coles Myer Voucher.

What is the influence of an acute bout of low intensity exercise on connections between brain regions and cognitive control?

Participants are required between the ages of 18 - 30 years of age, who feel comfortable exercising for 30 minutes at low intencity.

Two sessions (3 hours each) are required

To reimburse you for travel/parking costs we will provide you with $20 per session ($40 in total) at the end of the study

Study investigating the effect of almonds on brain function in kids

Eligible children must be:

  • Healthy 8-13 year olds
  • No nut allergy
  • No clinically diagnosed sleep or behavioural disorders
  • Able to read and write in English
  • Attend 5 visits to the UniSA City East Campus, each lasting 60-90 mins

What? Participants must eat FREE almond or water snacks for 16 weeks total (5 days/week, 2 X 8-week phases). Honorarium provided on completion.

We are recruiting healthy volunteers!

If you…

  • Are between 18 to 50 years
  • Are right-handed
  • Do not have acute or chronic pain
  • Do not have neurological or psychiatric disorders
  • Do not have history of trauma or surgeries in the hand and arm
  • Able to communicate in English

The Body in Mind laboratory is conducting research about hand movement and pain expectation. In the study, you will be asked to move your hand and during the movement you will sometimes receive a painful stimulation to your hand. The experiment will last 40 minutes and we will reimburse you $20 for your time.

Cyclists WANTED

You may be eligible to participate if you are:

  • Male
  • 18 - 50 years of age
  • A cyclist or triathlete
  • Competing in professional, amateur or recreational races, or performng cycling training 2+ times per week with a high level of fitness
  • Not currently taking medication that may alter heart rate or physical performance
  • Not allergic to almonds or dried fruits

Participation in the study will involve:

  • 5 weeks of prescribed cycling training
  • 8 hours total exercise testing at the University of South Australia, City East, North Terrace.

You will receive:

  • all foods will be supplied
  • a free VO Max test
  • an honorarium of $350 at the completion of the study

Reframe the pain:  Using attention and language to manage needle pain and distress in children

Many people don't like needles.  This fear often stems from a bad experience as a child, getting a needle for some kids can be a painful, distressing experience.
Talking to children in helpful ways after a needle can be really helpful in having them think about it in a less negative way and this might also help them cope better with needles in the future.  We also know that there are ways that we can distract or direct attention that can help reduce pain.  This may help decrease fear of future needles by making the experience of a needle, itself, less painful.

Improving Brain Stimulation Therapy

We are looking for adults aged 18 - 35 years old.
Experimental sessions will include recordings of brain activity and brain stimulation.
The brain stimulation technique is safe and painless and is routinely used in movement and learning research.
This study requires 6 sessions of approximately one hour each in duration (total of 6 hours).

Neural connectivity as a marker of post-stroke function

This ability is the basis for modification in human performance and behaviour. Recovery from brain injuries such as stroke relies heavily upon this ability of the brain to reorganise, allowing stroke survivors to regain function and improve performance.

This experiment will involve a series of measures to investigate brain networks, arm function, and responses to different brain stimulation techniques.

Have you had gestational diabetes?

We are looking for women who have had gestational diabetes (diabetes that first develops in pregnancy) to take part in a survey investigating how they feel about their weight and what sort of things might make being healthy and losing weight either difficult or easy.

Volunteers will take part in a one-off online survey that will take about 15 minutes to complete.

We want your opinion about fat

 There is much confusing and conflicting information about diet in the media. Where do people turn for trustworthy nutrition advice?

With this brief online survey we would like to know your perception and understanding of the health benefits of fat in our diet, and information provided by official dietary guidelines and popular health websites.

Weight loss study for women who have had Gestational Diabetes

We are looking for volunteers to take part in a weight loss study to investigate whether an intermittent energy restricted diet, also known as the "5:2 diet" can help women who have had Gestational Diabetes (diabetes that develops in pregnancy) lose weight and prevent the development of Type 2 Diabetes.  If you have had Gestational Diabetes in the last five years, you may be eligible to participate.

Volunteers will be asked to follow a specific diet program, either the 5:2 diet (2 days of very low calorie intake and 5 days of sensible eating) or a conventional diet where calories are moderately reduced every day (you will be randomly assigned to a diet group and cannot choose which one you are allocated to).

Participation in the study will last 12 months and will involve 7 appointments with the project's Research Dietician at UniSA's Clinical Trials Facility on Frome Road.  We will ask to take a blood sample on 3 occasions throughout the study to check your glucose and insulin levels as well as cholesterol.  Upon completion of the study, volunteers will receive an honorarium payment of $50.

Healthy mother - infant outcomes

We are seeking  new mothers and their infants to participate in a study investigating a new tool to assess healthy mother – infant outcomes.

  • Are you over 18 years
  • Did not have a multiple birth
  • Are able to understand and communicate in the English language

Researchers at The University of South Australia are conducting experiments to investigate the effect of past illicit drug use on brain control of movement.

Illicit drug use and brain control of movement
•             Participants must be aged between 18 – 50 years
•             Participants with a history of cannabis, ecstasy, and/or methamphetamine use are invited to participate
•             The study involves approximately 4 hours in total over 2-3 sessions.

The outcomes from the study will be used to develop a public health message with the aim to reduce the number of young people trying methamphetamine.
