Mt Gambier Learning CentreIn her early teens Mt Gambier student, Jenae Fox, knew she wanted to be a teacher but she was equally convinced she would probably have to leave home to study.

But timing is everything and a few years on, armed with an impressive ATAR of 99.95 (with bonus points), Fox can now study primary teaching on home ground in Mt Gambier.

“I have always wanted to be a teacher, kind of following in mum’s footsteps, but I am so excited about my results and that it is all now possible,” Fox says.

“The fact that I can study at home, where all my friends, family and support networks are is great and I will be studying in the new campus facilities which look just amazing.”

Fox says she knows that when she has finished her teaching degree, she is likely to move away from the home she loves, but the benefits of being able to study for the degree in Mt Gambier are enormous.

“It means I can continue all my sport and coaching activities and be close to my family for just that little bit longer. And I think the campus really looks and feels like a university so I don’t feel I am missing out on anything by studying regionally.”

The University of South Australia is the only SA university that offers teacher education in the regions.

Teaching commenced at both Mt Gambier and Whyalla in 2013.

Fox will commence her studies in the new $12.5million Learning Centre, open in 2016 celebrating the University’s 25th anniversary and its commitment to education in South Australia.
