How Do I Become a Secondary Mathematics Teacher?

Mathematics teachers are in demand in South Australia, Australia and around the world, providing graduates with international and domestic employment opportunities.

What do I need to study?

To become a Secondary Mathematics Teacher you will need to study one the following options:

Option one:
Study the following packaged pathway combination:

UniSA Preferred (Guaranteed entry score): 85

The advantage in entering under the guaranteed entry pathway is that once you successfully complete your undergraduate degree, you will automatically gain entry into the Master of Teaching (Secondary)*.

*subject to meeting GPA requirements and subject selection

Option two:
Study a relevant 3 year undergraduate degree from a recognised higher education provider. UniSA offers:

On successful completion of your undergraduate degree, you will need to apply via SATAC and enrol in the following postgraduate program in teaching with UniSA:

On successful completion of these programs you will meet the criteria to apply for registration as a teacher in South Australia and interstate. Other criteria may apply.

Do I need to complete specific courses?

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Mathematics program need to select the Data Science/Industrial and Applied Mathematics specialisation.

Data Science Specialisation:

If you select the Data Science specialisation, you will cover mathematics, IT and data science, allowing you to have IT and Mathematics as your two learning areas if you plan to go onto the Master of Teaching.

Applied and Industrial Maths Specialisation:

If you select the Applied and Industrial Maths specialisation, you will have several electives to choose from. If you plan to go onto the Master of Teaching, you will need to take two maths courses at each level 1, level 2, and level 3. There are also electives that can be taken from Science including physics, chemistry and biology.

Teachers Registration
On successful completion of the Master of Teaching (Secondary) you will meet the criteria to apply for registration as a teacher in South Australia and interstate. Other criteria may apply.
