What are the major issues facing our world today? Massive credit bobble, global warming, environmental degradation, conflicts, poverty, famine, refugees, radicalization, terrorism, political polarization, lack of support for international organizations and so forth. We have plenty to worry about. Are we doing enough to avoid calamities down the road? Where is global governance, when it is needed? Should we allow narrow nationalistic policies dictate the global agenda? The answer is NO. Now is the time to think globally and act locally.
In this lecture, H.E. Mr Lars Backström will explore many of these issues from a personal perspective having visited all independent states in the world and having served in many countries over the course of his 35 years in Finland's Foreign Service.
The Ambasssador invites you on a journey from his native Finland via the European Union to the Middle-East, Africa, America, Asia and Australia.
Ambassador Lars BACKSTRÖM assumed his duties as Ambassador of Finland to Australia in October 2016. Ambassador Backström has been on a number of postings, including Turkey, Nigeria, New York and Belgium. He has been Ambassador of Finland to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, the People’s Republic of China and Mongolia. He has also held the positions of Ambassador and Deputy Facilitator, Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone, and Ambassador and Special Representative for Mediation with focus on Asia at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Helsinki.
