Official Launch of the Alexander Downer Collection by the Hon John Howard OM AC

Take a journey through our nation's political history, and view artefacts including photographs, speeches and documents, newspaper articles, correspondence, realia and more from a period that spans three generations and more than 120 years.

As Australia's longest-serving Foreign Minister; a Member of Parliament for more than 20 years and current High Commissioner in London, the Hon. Alexander Downer AC has made a remarkable contribution to international diplomacy and national politics.

Mr Downer's contribution is the latest in a legacy that began with his grandfather Sir John Downer, Premier of South Australia and a member of the first Federal Senate. It continued with his father, Sir Alick Downer's time in roles such as federal Immigration Minister and High Commissioner in London.

Mr Downer has donated an extensive collection of papers and artefacts related to his own, as well as his father's and grandfather's careers to the University of South Australia. The collection creates a unique archive of Australian and South Australian history for the benefit of scholars and political enthusiasts.
