Samstag Scholarships return

Samstag is back

Friday, 30 January 2009

In welcome news for those many artists around Australia dreaming of well-funded stays in foreign ports, Samstag is back, and inviting applications for the 2010 Samstag Scholarships.

Last year's moratorium on awarding Samstag Scholarships – announced by the Samstag Trustee in a prudent response to the global economic meltdown – reputedly caused much angst among emerging artists and recent graduates who seriously covet Samstag's 'golden passport' to rapid success and professional visibility. And in a once-off gesture to those applicants whose eligibility expired last year, when no scholarships were awarded, the Samstag Program has considerately extended eligibility to 'six-years' after graduation (for the 2010 scholarships only).

Applications for the 2010 Samstag Scholarships close on 30 June 2009.

Meanwhile, there can be no denying the leveraging power of the Samstag name, for those artists fortunate to secure one of these prestigious international scholarships.

2001 Samstag Scholar, Shaun Gladwell, will be Australia's official representative at the 2009 Venice Biennale, presenting his work at the Australian Pavilion in Venice's Giardini; while Sean Cordeiro and Claire Healy (who shared a productive Samstag-sponsored year in Berlin, in 2006 and 2007), are among a select group of four Australian artists curated by Felicity Fenner, and exhibiting nearby in Castello at the Ludoteca, concurrent with the Venice Biennial.

Brilliant - and the list of success and achievement grows!
