Standardised fitness testing is embedded within physical education curriculums around the world. Some studies suggest the current practice of fitness testing in schools may be detrimental and discourage participation in activities that promote fitness. Perceptions of fitness testing is important to consider as it influences the individuals’ interest, self-efficacy, motivation and ultimately, performance in fitness tests. These psychological factors also play an important role in future physical activity behaviours.
Findings from previous research highlight the detrimental impact that negative physical activity and fitness testing experiences may have on future physical activity behaviours. The aim of this study is to examine the attitudes and experiences around fitness testing in Australian children through a survey.
